As the Japanese kami (orgod) of fire, Kagutsuchi has one of the most unique and fascinating stories in Shintoism.It is a rather short story too but, just like a raging forest fire, it has affected all of Shinto mythology and has made Kagutsuchi one of the best-known and most worshipped kami in Japan. There are no records to show what it was like in ancient times, and many details are unclear. All of these kami can influence people's everyday lives and so they are worshipped, given offerings, solicited for aid and, in some cases, appealed to for their skills in divination. Most of these kami have started as local deities for particular Japanese clans and have either remained as such or have grown into the roles of national kami for all of Japan. In the Shinto religion Kami is an all-embracing term which signifies gods, spirits, deified mortals, ancestors, natural phenomena, and supernatural powers. Because of this, all kami could turn into yokai if not respected and celebrated appropriately. However, Izanagi eventually scares them away by striking an imposing stance in the Kojiki 1 and by throwing down peaches in the Nihongi. When this idea was brought to Japan and applied to Shinto beliefs, the idea became that kami had both peaceful/positive aspects (nigi) and negative/angry aspects (arami). Later in the text of the Kojiki Izanami enraged that her husband Izanagi looked upon her dead body and fled from her, sends the Thunder kami and an army of 1500 after him.
